Rei Kawakubo founded the Comme des Garçons brand in 1969, which was officially launched in 1971. Born in Tokyo in 1942, Kawakubo studied art and literature at Keio University before working in advertising and as a freelance stylist. Her first fashion show took place in Paris in 1981 and attracted attention, particularly for its use of black. Despite initial criticism, Comme des Garçons established itself as an influential brand in the fashion world.
