About Burberry

Burberry was founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry in Basingstoke, Hampshire. The young merchant opened a shop for high-quality outdoor clothing and in 1879 developed the innovative gabardine fabric, a durable, water-repellent yet breathable material. In 1891, Burberry opened a branch in London and established itself as a leading provider of weatherproof clothing. During the First World War, the trench coat, originally designed for soldiers, became the house's trademark. In the 1920s, the iconic check pattern was introduced, which is now known worldwide. Today, Burberry stands for British tradition and timeless elegance.
